Get with the Radical Self Love and Stop f*#!ing Around Already!
I have come to a rather inspiring conclusion today, or maybe it was sitting under the surface for quite some time now but not quite ready to surface. In any case, I am FED UP with doubting myself, beating myself up (for what?), playing the critic and losing hoards of positive energy on the negative. Basically, I am ready to put all that self drain to an end and start sailing towards the glorious that my own mentality has to offer! I have been reading a bit of Gala Darlings writing and she is absolutely right. WTF are we all so worried about?!? Anyways, in her spirit here is my own personal list of ways to improve my own radical self love – applied immediately!
- The past is in the past. You are living in the NOW. Don’t let regrets or mistakes (that all happened for a reason might I add) drag you down or knock you off the positive course you are on. Write a Post-It of what you want to let go of, fold it up, say your goodbyes then toss it and flush it down the toilet (seriously). Come clean, whatever happens will only make you stronger. Don’t let lies and negative energies fester within (these are the toxins that later turn into cancers – both physical and mental). Let it go. We are only human, take pride in being able to say you act like one!
- Buy some classical music. How nice it is I have discovered to not listen to the garbage the radio fills your head with. Honestly who the hell wants to learn Miley Cyrus’ philosophies on life all day? Just the fact that there are no words is settling enough!
- Cook for yourself and the people you love. I know there are so many girls and women today who claim they are not the homemaker type (and please don’t think you have to be some sort of housewife to gain valuable culinary skills), but honestly you are cutting yourself short. Not only is it an amazing outlet for creativity, but the pride you feel when everything you made from your own two hands is being enjoyed is overwhelming! Food is something that brings everyone together, and in that sense I am the ultimate “mom”. I love when I can feed someone and do it from scratch. Not so inspired? Check out Jamie Oliver’s genius. He is the one who got me on the cooking track (yeah yeah, I know… when will I EVER shut up about him right?!? NEVER!!!). Fresh herbs, flavors and technique make his recipes accessible, easy and enjoyable. Best part is that you will want to “play” with all of his advice suggestions every time you cook after that
. Your body will thank you as well from skipping on frozen foods for a fresh, healthy and slimming alternative!
- Sleeeeep! One thing I cannot function without! I know you want to watch that hideously ridiculous reality tv show, but honestly (no offense Jersey Shore) I think your well-being is a tad more important! Take a bath, sniff some lavender and wind yourself down. Get in the sleep zone and INDULGE away with dreams of summer escapes and Parisian picnics.
- Read a book. No, not the internet. Not a blog post you feel obliged to comment on – but an ACTUAL piece of paper with a story you can learn something and daydream away with. Escapism does the body good.
- Eat that piece of cake! If your gonna do it, why the HELL would you ruin it with the bitter aftertaste of guilt?
- Be unapologetic. Don’t be sorry or make excuses for the way you are! That’s just way it is and everyone else can EAT IT! My biggest downfall in many ways is that I CARE too much. Don’t get me wrong, this is a quality that must be preserved – but for the right times and places. If you like a pair of shoes that no one else does then THEY can deal with it. You just enjoy the way they look on your feet and the feeling they give you as you strut your stuff down the street
. Be yourself instead of a people pleaser, after time you will see that it will only make you more of an interesting person.
- Create a zen space. Now by zen I do not mean you set up yoga shop and feng shui the place according to someone elses rules. I mean be it a studio, your room, house or apartment – make it yours. A place you can thrive in, re-juice the battery and enjoy. If fluorescent yellow walls and latex sofas make you feel comfortable and cuddly then HOOK IT UP SIR! Express yourself and make it a dwelling space you are proud to occupy.
- Drink coffee as a treat, not jet fuel. There is nothing more enjoyable to me than a latte out with friends around 3pm when I am running out of energy and need a bit of a boost. Chugging it all day while watching my body convulse and shake and my mouth never stop talking like a strung out junkie – not so much. I like feeling calm. I have noticed that I ALWAYS end up getting sick when I replace coffee for proper bodily care. Moral of this story – enjoy coffee and ingest with caution!
- Surround your life with pugs! Now I know you all probably think I’m a crazy pug lady with no friends who hides in her apartment and only ever talks to them (and you are RIGHT), but seriously they bring me so much joy it just wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t recommend them to you too :p Well behaved little angels who are the perfect side kick to your life.
- Wear makeup. Instant fix for the self esteem, creativity outlet and magical transformation tool! Be a fairy one day, a goth queen the next and top it all off with theatrical face paint just because. Show all the sides you feel you are on the inside. The bombshell, the porn star, the darling coquine, or innocence herself. Play with your paint and stop obsessing on if you are doing it right – there are no wrongs as long as you feel good wearing it!
- Find exercise! I am not exactly the ideal candidate to be advocating this as fitness for me consists of walking to and from the microwave to attain my popcorn fix…. BUT, the few times that I have tried it in my life I have enjoyed the aftermath of endorphins! My next goal is some intense burlesque dance lessons and a mix of yoga for strength, stretching, stress busting breathing techniques and meditation. Experiment with activities instead of going to the gym and watching CNN on the overhead flat screen while you sweat your ass off on a hamster wheel.
- Do something uninterrupted! Throw twitter, facebook and texting to the wind (gasp!) and just focus on one thing at a time. I know this day and age calls for multitasking a la max, but understand that you will not complete the task at hand to the best of your ability if you are constantly interrupting your concentration! Ignore everything for a while and indulge in how great it sometimes feels to FOCUS.
- Feel sexy. Do WHATEVER it takes to get you to that point. Buy naughty knickers, a sex toy, put on risque shade of lipstick and curl your hair… flirt, accept a drink from a stranger (just make sure you saw who made it), skinny dip, take naked pictures… become the fantasy. Everyone has different things that make them feel like a seductive siren – find what works for you and use it shamelessly! When you feel sexy all the impossibles turn into realities.
- Daydream. About fashion, boys, your fairytale life, traveling the world, winning the Olympics, visiting Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory… a little bit of delusion adds a bit of excitement to any day
- Surround yourself with people who have your back. They may not always be the most exciting or the ones you click with the best, but these are the people who actually deserve your attention and time. The ones who are there for you and who are always true. Value them and show them you appreciate who they are to you.
- Flush out all the badness! Whatever is not working for you in your life get rid of already!!! People, food, ideas, career, relationship. If you aren’t thrilled with something or can’t make it better – MOVE ON! Life is short, let’s not waste time on the lesser things – live it up!
- Be kind to your bank account! As much as we live in a consumer crazy world, try to cut back and save up a little. You would be amazed at how good it feels when you have a lump sum staring back at you just because you were a tad more careful with watching where all your hard earned cash went. Remember that’s what it is – HARD EARNED CASH. Only spend it on things that are worth the time it took out of YOUR LIFE to make it.
- Travel the world. There is nothing more amazing than falling down the rabbit hole of different ways of life and cultures. The world itself is the biggest playground of knowledge I have yet to come across.
- Make your own rules. Just because something works for someone else does not guarantee that it will work for you. Find your own formula for success and happiness
. As long as you aren’t hurting anyone else in the process there ain’t no shame in your game!
- Be in love. Shower someone in all your love. Stop holding back, stop doubting. Just love and enjoy being loved back. It is amazing the things you can accomplish in life when you have your best friend and lover at your side.
- Be an exhibitionist. When I am at home you better believe that I am mostly always “au naturale”. As much as I love clothing it just doesn’t seem to have a place in my home life. I love cooking in the nude (uuummmm… nothing fried with oil though – OWWW!!). Strange maybe, but try it and I’m sure it will change your mind!
- Wear perfume. Don’t stop at just finding your favorite scent – mix and match the ones you already have for a more unique personal scent
There is nothing stronger than the allure of an amazing smelling person! Oh, and be subtle please… there is nothing seductive about someone who smells like the bottle exploded on them.
- Learn something new every day. We are all students in the game of life. Take up a class, read about something new. Expand your horizons as well as your mind.
- Ride your bicycle. I for one hate driving. As I live in the great white North I only get half a year of summery weather. When it’s here, I enjoy it. Not only is riding your bike everywhere so much more pleasurable (especially on a beautifully sunny day), but it is pretty much a day’s workout on it’s own. I can’t wait for spring to take out my cruiser and hit up town with pug in the front basket
Last, but most certainly not least – love yourself. Know that you are the only you. That all your faults and weaknesses are beautiful and what make you the piece of art that you are. Work on your passions, develop your soul. Never stop learning and indulge in the things you love. Encourage your inner ambition to be the best version of yourself you can… always remember that change is good and embrace it!
I love me, and all of you!
Happy Love thyself weekend

I’ve totally been reading Gala Darlings’ list too. It’s just fun! It’s kind of overwhelming, so I just read it in bits and pieces. But bike riding, good food, love love love: yes, that’s a recipe for a happy life.

What a great post! Loved it! I agree with surrounding your life with pugs – I’d have another pug if the council allowed us three dogs. And cooking! I adore it. Cooking is my therapy and Jamie Oliver recipes are simply sublime!
