Alright, I LOVE the underwater coral photography you took and altered in a reflective manner… I also noticed the same textures found in the photography mimic your other sculptural pieces – was this planned or just something you are naturally attracted to as an artist?

Why thanks very much!

I’m naturally drawn to organic shapes and forms. It’s a chaos theory thing. I love how you can see patterns in nature, it’s fascinating to me. Coral is a perfect example. I’m completely infatuated with

the underwater world and always have been. I suppose subconciously I have always taken patterns and textures on board and stored them. I feel I have a decent internal library of these which I can call on. These days I have a library of useable mediums that I can cross reference with the natural stuff. When I’m creating a sculpture I seem to use mediums with a element of randomness as part of the whole, that way things are left to chance to a certain degree and therefore refer to nature in a more pure way. I like it when man-made objects and things show the effects of age, weatherbeaten or damaged and overgrown. Rust patterns, flaky and cracked paint and so on.

What would you say are your main inspirations?  Is there a particular meaning behind all of your pieces or is is dependent?

Definitely Mother Nature, she’s everything and I have a monster crush!

There’s  an underlying theme to all my work. Each piece has a different meaning within the whole ethos of my aesthetic.

How did you know you wanted to create art professionally, and what would your best piece of advice be to artists just starting out?

Subconsciously I’ve engineered my life towards what I do, I think I run on autopilot a fair bit but I trust my mind to do the right thing. I’ve done lots of awful, soul-destroying jobs in my time. I would spend all my time in the warehouse, building site, production line, wherever, thinking about all the cool, fun stuff I could be creating instead. So I figured I would just try and make ends meet creating cool, fun stuff. If I hadn’t I’d have lost it a long time ago! I think it’s ridiculous that you have to spend five days out of seven doing something you despise just so you can try and enjoy the other two.

Advice wise I would say that if you love it, do it for yourself, stay true to yourself and take it from there. Also don’t feel like anyone owes you anything for your art, that’s the totally wrong approach in my opinion. Never be satisfied with your work, you can always do better.

Where did your love for creating monsters and infestations in sneakers come from?  Haha…

I just like making things, always have. I did a sneaker customization project a fair few years ago, it was with my very good friends Luke and Jody, who I share a studio with and was just bored of seeing shoes with some graff on them. Just thought we’d approach the project from a different angle. Plus it’s a lot of fun!

It’s grown from there. Literally.

What would you say is the hardest thing to defeat as an artist?

Poverty.

How did you get to master pretty much every medium you apply yourself to?  From sculpture to graphic prints and photography, I would say you are something of a jack of all trades!

That’s really kind. I just don’t like to suck at stuff. If I can be creative with it then I’m interested, if I’m interested I’ll work it out! Physical creative processes make sense to me, how materials work together or don’t. There’s so much to learn and I enjoy learning a lot.

Top 5 musical albums of all time (that never get old and stay fresh every time you play them)?  Do they inspire you while you work?

That’s pretty much impossible to answer. I love all kinds of music/bands/songs/albums for different occasions both mental and physical. Here’s a wee list of music I’m into…

I really don’t follow the arts scene but do admire the work of Tara Donovan, Alphonse Mucha, Jim Phillips, Ernst Haeckel, Alex Trochut and a whole bunch of other people…

If you could travel anywhere (really… anywhere), where would it be, why and what would you do while you’re there?

So many possibilities…

I would love to go back to a time before humans and check out the megafauna and flora, giant dragonflies, mushrooms and so on but particularly under the ocean and untainted coral reefs. I would swim about and take it all in. As I can time travel here let’s assume I can breath underwater, have a perfect photographic memory and be invincible too!

The abyssal deep, no time travelling required but the same attributes as above.

Again I could go on…

Your collaborations hold close ties to boarding companies – how did you start your work with them?

I first skateboarded in 1977/8, then got sidetracked by bikes and stuff then got right back into it in 1985 and kept skating a lot for the next 19 years. I still skate occasionally as it makes me really happy. Loads of my friends are skaters or affiliated and as they got older they actually got jobs!  So that’s the way it happened really. Skate Mafia.

Any top secret projects you are currently working on that you could tease your fans via anticipation with?

They could be so top secret that I don’t even know about them! The only thing are these art figurines I designed for Pointer Footwear here in London, it’s taken over five years from the initial design and model through all the crazy manufacturing processes to the finished article. They are based on atomic tests in the Pacific, natural forms and patterns, they are modular and fit together in various ways. Again referencing the way natural and manmade patterns are so connected. Hopefully they will be available by Christmas.

What would be the highest honor for you to receive for your work?  What do you see in your future (time to get psychic…)?

At this point in time…money! (not honourable at all but hey…) That and being asked to exhibit my work in an epic gallery. I’ve got some ideas for some rather cool shows, but would require both of my other hopes to actually happen!

As for the future I foresee a move to a different place. I’m thinking California or the Pacific North West. I love it there. Ocean, sun, desert, forest and mountains, I need these things in my life. Big Time! Also an amazing women to enjoy life with. Sounds good to me, let’s see what happens…

Fellow Montrealers (and world on a whole)… let me officially introduce you to fashion’s next big thing…

Hip & Bone.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, you’re totally thinking… isn’t it RAG & Bone… and why are they ripping their style anyway?

They’re not.  Get over it.

Hip & Bone is Montreal based, created and inspired.  Not only do they have amazing graphic t’s that make the ultimate statement, but they subliminally and  subtly name drop some of the world’s craziest conspiracy theories (or are they) that ever existed.  At first glance, the logo’s and writing on the back of each detailed shirt just look like smart branding… but when you actually take the time to research the information found on every item you will realize that each graphic holds a very specific and haunting meaning.

The brand showcases twisted events like MK-ULTRA (a mind control government human testing program that actually took place during the 50′s and 60′s), Bilderberg (a mysterious conference that takes place once a year including some of the world’s most politically influential representatives… where no votes are taken, statements made or resolutions proposed) and HAARP (a government based program set to research sound waves and frequencies that some believe to have caused everything from devastating earthquakes to Gulf War and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome).

This is some creepy cool X-files shit right here!

In any case, I was honored to be asked to shoot their catalogue for them (one of the founders happens to be my neighbor – I swear I live in the coolest building of life) and the F514 crew and theirs combined to bring some very fresh photo’s that we’re all quite proud of!

Props to Matthew (who also doubled as a hottie model), Vlad and my buddy Robby for the amazing photography, to the models for being their stellar selves and to Carlos & co. for creating such a crazy/cool line I can’t wait to see on international shelves!  Representin’ for Annabelle, I did hair and makeup on our fresh-faced dudes using the SkinTrue collection and Mineral Powder Foundation (my personal faves for a coveted full-coverage glow).

Oh, and a funny tidbit you can make fun of me for later?

Amongst all the controversy and theories (and anti-media base in some senses), I proudly rocked my Justin Bieber t-shirt all shoot long .

This little manifesto can be found on their site (which is equally impressive as far as amazing graphic art goes) which I totally love.

What a great extended motto to attach yourself to.

Love what they stand for but want more of what the brand is about?  When you buy any item of clothing from their collection you receive an little black embossed envelope with a password to their private and exclusive blog (which is as great as it is marvelously random).

Currently exclusively available online and soon to be sold in some of the world’s finest shops.

Regardless of it being a menswear line, I am all about rocking the tee I have from the shoot (the foxes and heart graphic – check it out… works well on women for a funny booby effect).

I have been nauseous and bloated for the past few days nonstop.  I don’t need to tell you that when you are feeling under the weather the last thing on your mind is work and motivation.  I have had no fuel to feed the fire within and just needed some down time – so thank y’all for hangin’ in there with me through thick and thin (this is a blog marriage)!

So last Thursday was the Diner en Blanc I have been talking about for the longest time!  This year it was in Square Victoria (I’m telling you I guessed it long before the big day arrived), and we were completely lucky we didn’t get caught in the rainstorm that was supposed to go down that night.

I think the 3,000 peeps that attended all prayed hard enough to convince the gods to spare us one .

As far as food went, I packed easy picnic essentials… bread, cheese, tomato and pesto pasta salad, prosciutto, shrimp cocktail, and Red Velvet cupcakes that gave me my very own out-of-body experience… sinful.

The best part of my night?  Spending it with the most handsome man in the city .  My babes was decked out in an all-white tux and looking FINE FINE FINE!!!  Unfortunately, I am a total asshole and only took pics of him from my iPhone (this is what happens when there is too much champagne at hand)… so stay tuned on facebook for some mobile uploads coming your way soon!

Seriously though, everyone looked magnificent and brought so much originality/creativity to the event and payed some serious attention to the fine details!  All in all everything was a giant, glamorous success that I was crazy happy to have been included in!

I think it was THESE shrimps that screwed up my stomach big-time.  I place all the blame here (they tasted mighty sketch).

Welcome to Monday

This week I am a very lucky Miss to be featured on the local Billie Boutique’s homepage and blog!

On an entirely separate note… I am in love with Toni Braxton’s voice all over again and can’t get enough of Muse’s Neutron Star Collision… that man’s voice is hauntingly excellent.

Tonight is the Diner en Blanc I’ve been waiting for for so long!  For those of you who have never heard of it before (it is an event they put on annually in Paris as of the last 30 years that they have just started as of last year here in Montreal), it is essentially an uber-glam flash mob!  Super-strict rules as to table dimensions and what you can bring… but everything (yes… absolutely EVERYTHING, must be adorned in white)!  This year there is said to be around 3,000 guests that will be setting up their elaborate picnics in one of Montreal’s most sophisticated outdoor landmarks.  I am beyond excited as this event is completely up my alley – glam, personalized and a little bit badass.  You see, because such an overwhelming amount of people are taking over a technically illegal space – the police are said to turn their head (so long as we clean up after ourselves and don’t get too wasted)… but who knows… maybe you’ll be hearing from me next from my one phone call in prison (I joke, I joke…).

In any case… I still have to go grocery shopping and put together something deliciously fantastical for my babe and I (can you believe he will be sporting an all-white tux?!  I can’t wait to see my handsome man all done up)!

Tuesday was awesome.  I got to chill with Mr. Angelo Cadet in my studio and we had some camera fun in the fire escape (with pug)!  Stay tuned on my fb fanpage for the entire interview of this crazy inspiring man Montreal is lucky enough to hold as one of it’s own

It’s like, regardless of the eight long years you’ve had to form yourself into whatever kind of person you aspire to be, instead you chose the “same ‘ol, same ‘ol”.  I’m not saying this is a bad thing per say… but I do know that if hadn’t at all evolved from the person I was in high school I would gladly welcome being put out of my misery.

Okay, okay, maybe that’s a little harsh and over dramatic (I certainly don’t want to die – so please, no one take that as a death wish), but really – what is the point of life if you don’t continue to grow in every way that you can?  The moment you stop exploring and working on your inner person and experiences, is the moment you are at a standstill.  The moment you become stagnant and stale.

I continue to observe people from my past that never seem to learn their lesson (while others have become totally different people as a result).  They are still doing the same things and attracting the EXACT same reactions/responses from life.  I’m all for the saying “If you don’t succeed, try, try again” but for god’s sake, at a certain point you are just playing the fool.  This does not mean you have to abandon your quest for whatever you are looking for – just maybe try a different route?

A little thinking outside of the box never heart anyone…

Okay, now I know this is a totally preference-related call… but one thing I never got?

Circles of friends who continuously date each other.  WHY?!?!  Why do SO many people feed off this incestuous vibe???  Hey, I get it… sometimes you meet someone really exceptional and you cross the barrier of friend to flame.  What I don’t understand, is when it doesn’t work out how some can just bounce off to the next friend until they’ve literally ticked everyone off their “to do” list (ahem… no pun intended).

Why do friends allow this in the first place?

If one of my exe’s besties decided to ask me out, the answer (no matter how much I might be into them) would always remain “no”.  For me, it’s just a sign of respect for what we had (and I think it’s pretty damn ballsy for the friend to have initiated in the first place – kinda shows how near and dear they hold their friend).  There are exceptions to this rule… but only if it is true love.  I’m sorry, just cause you’re feeling rowdy and drank too much one night is super LAME (not to mention hurtful).

One thing that kinda pisses me off are all these white trash sitcoms about middle class teens getting knocked up by each others boyfriends.  A normal person would just enjoy it for entertainment value and shake it off as another dumb soap.  Unfortunately, some people become used to this mentality and end up applying it to their own lives, hoping to achieve the same amount of drama and attention the characters in the shows receive.

Personally, I don’t think I could ever allow myself to be passed around and viewed as a “sloppy second” of sorts.  When it comes to my self-worth, I am extremely protective.  Call me a name, disrespect or regard me in any less of what I deserve, and strike one you’re out.  I have given second chances, but only when sure it will never, ever happen again.  When you allow yourself to visibly do rounds in front of others like that, not only do you look desperate and willing to take whatever comes your way, but you look mega unattractive.

Knowing what you want and not caving because you’ve got the itch or can’t stand to be alone shows an incredible strength of character.  All I remember about the girls and guys who used to continuously pass around partners, was how little they cared about the actual person (you have to be indifferent to not get jealous) they were involved with.  Why would anyone want to be with someone else who thinks them anything less than a god/goddess?  Really?!?  I mean, especially if you are only in it for the fun!

Needless to say, I have noticed the very same people who were doing it then, still doing it now.  I haven’t even been there the whole time watching, so I can only imagine all the action I’ve missed (well, not really…).  I know that I am far from perfect, but I enjoy the challenge of meeting new people and discovering something new.  The moment I start looking to my friends to get my groove on is the moment I’ll realize I’m not putting myself out there enough.  The world has BILLIONS of people!!!  Why do some feel the need to recycle lovers SO MUCH!?!?!

Let’s get our freshness on!!!

On a happier note – the exceptional Jon Todd will be starting an original painting for me!!!  I am beyond excited and can’t wait to see what he comes up with for my first ever collectible piece of original art (besides of course my grandparents paintings)!  Diner en Blanc is next Thursday – preppin’ for a super special night with my babe and can’t wait to see all the glamor go down!

WOOHOO!!!  I’m pumped!

How do some of you do it?

Do you put a cap on your imagination and only set it free at the end of the day when you’re on the way home?  Or do you use it and channel it into whatever you’re working on?  I know sometimes I get a little stir crazy sitting all day and night in my basement studio… I do have my little escapes (watching my goldfish, making a cup of coffee, listening to James Morrison and blogging relentlessly while my face is covered in green facemask goo), but sometimes the internet is just not enough to get the inspiration juices going.  Sometimes it’s going and sitting beside someone on the metro, tasting a fresh pie from the market or meeting someone close to you…

Which brings me to my next point (sort of)…

Second chances.

I have a friend who I could swear no longer respects me for some of the decisions I’ve made.

When my boyfriend and I were going through some excruciatingly hard times, I spilled my guts to her.  I know she did not approve of how the two of us had sabotaged each other in the past, and could feel a strong air of disappointment from her for us sticking things through and trying to get past all the hurt.

I am SO beyond proud of how far we have come, and if anything our struggle has only shown me that our love truly is indestructible.  It saddens me that I feel like I’ve lost a friend during my uphill journey to rebuilding the love and lust in my relationship though.

Why are people so resistant to giving others second chances?

Nobody is perfect and sometimes we screw up.  I did.  Big time.  So did my boyfriend.  It hurt us both brutally.

You know what though?

Although we may have been very close to a breaking point, there was never a doubt in either of our minds when it came to the value of what we were both fighting for.  We both gave each other second chances (actually, if you count, probably something closer to fifth or sixth chances)… as many as each of us needed to “get the point” and move on.  Enough for us to go to counseling and figure out why we were both acting like total assholes.  Enough and more than were probably warranted, but when you love someone you really never ever get to that point when “enough is enough”.

We were lucky.  We survived it all and had the staying power (and I believe that despite our differences sometimes, we will never let each other go… there is some strange force that no matter how much can come to loathe each other at times, there is nowhere else we’d rather be).

Second chances can translate to so much more than just relationships though… from forgiveness to believing in someone whose potential only you may see.  When it is deserved (and sometimes when it isn’t), a second chance can change someone’s entire world and perspective.

You may just find that it is one of the most valuable gifts (and definitely one of the harder ones) you can give.

Beautiful things can definitely help lessen the blow of the chaos life can sometimes create.  They are little material breaks of light in the midst of darkness.

Stay strong & beautiful – when you choose the path to happiness, sometimes you’ve gotta put your wellies on and tread up the muddy mountain path to get to the yellow brick road of sparkling Loubies…

Trust me.  I’ve been there… and now I’m looking to get my glitter on .

I gotta say… the last day of Sensation Mode’s Festival Mode & Design was something fierce to be reckoned with!!!

The festival sounded off with a crazy end-of-night lineup of some incredible brands bringing some amazing fashion to the stage (I especially loved the Dom Rebel show and aesthetic)!  The fashion colleges showcased some of their brightest students bringing structured garments, both studded and shaped, to edgy perfection.  Guess steamed up the runway and Dom Rebel played up sexiness with deconstructed denim and torn-effect tee’s.

Elle and I also treated ourselves to getting our nails done at the Candy Bar table (which I seriously have to visit in-shop… they make all their own 3D nail art by hand!  Truly beautiful and oh-so-crafty).  We waited a good hour at least (holding each other’s places while the other ran off to soak in the shows), but it was well worth it – we both got glamorized with some amazing cheetah-print nails!

The highlight though?

If only for it’s crazy and wide range of props and out-there costumes and accessories – The I heart Sensation show directed by Dick Walsh was pretty damn outstanding.

With at least thirty models in the show and props ranging from inflatable monkeys, chairs, disco balls, guitar cases, mascot heads, full body suits, afro wigs, snowboards, heart balloons, top hats and vampire capes (and there’s plenty more where that came from), the energy backstage was complete chaos.  So high-stress in fact, that Dick repeatedly demanded that we get out.  Of course we didn’t listen… we had just as much of a job to do as he – getting you some fine behind the scenes snaps of the intense randomness going down!!!  I don’t blame the guy though, keeping cool, calm and collected is near impossible when trying to organize a spectacle of this magnitude with so many factors that can go very wrong.

A big high-five to Mr. Walsh – he really seamlessly delivered something to remember!!!

Are these tights not perfection???  I want to wear them while I blog… seems so appropriate!

Of course the makeup was festive and full of glitter for the grand finale show…

Went grocery shopping late last night (actually for Mr. Noodles, milk and Pillsbury cookies for the man and I) and snapped up the very last edition on the rack of Clin d’Oeils 30th Anniversary Collectible Edition featuring moi (thank the lord for those racks of mags while you’re waiting in line)!

I am SUPER flattered to have been squeezed in there amongst some of blogging’s greatest (Style Bubble, Kingdom of Style, The Clothes Horse and Beauty Editor to name a few)… not quite sure if I’m worthy to be placed beside them, but hey – I ain’t complainin’!!!

Today I slept all day.  All night, and all day.  This past week has been full of thrills, amazing experiences and non-stop action… I must admit though, it took it’s toll on me and I am beyond EXHAUSTED (not to mention pretty behind on work)!!!

So Friday was awesome at the festival – definitely one of the highlight days!  Non-stop fashion shows, action, and incredible music… I’m telling ya, the energy on McGill street was bumpin’!

Starting off with the Diversite Corporelle fashion show (a show dedicated to showcasing all different types of body shapes as far as models go) then on to Forever 21, Montreal Confidential (the show I was in – woohoo!), FINN Cultured + Cured and finishing off with Style Xchange, the day was something of a marathon!

Loved the plum lips and liner – definitely the look I will be rockin’ for fall.

Here I am right before my runway debut!  How crazy is my hair?  I still have yet to wash it… all the teased knots are intimidating!  Gotta stock up on conditioner first!!!

I love how stylists/hair & makeup artists literally attack the models from every angle before they hit the stage… if only I had a team like this to get me ready every morning!!!

Oh, and I must add that CREATURE rocked the stage!!!  My favorite band of the festival – their sound is something completely unique and their own, and the ambiance they created for the final show of the night (Style Xchange) was perfect for the mood of the clothing.  Loved.

I truly had a blast walking the runway during Andrew McNally’s amazing nightlife-inspired show… check out my video (yeah, of course I filmed it on my iphone!) and please excuse that it isn’t the right way up (I couldn’t be bothered).  Team Canada delivered some pumpin’ beats and Plastik Patrik even hit up the runway!  Woot woot!  Elle and Matthew kept dancing and fist pumping at the base of the runway and we jammed together before each of my exits .  I loved that for the final lineup we got to walk together and party like rockstars a bit .  The best part was that there was no agenda for the outfits we had to wear – we could choose whatever we wanted in any order.  Fun, fun, FUN!  I would do it again in a heartbeat!  Thank you universe for aligning me with such a cool adventure!

Gonna get some more work done and then hit the pillow!  Shooting more Annabelle Get The Looks tomorrow, so if you have a makeup look suggestion you wanna see done let me know in the comment form!

Beyond non-stop fashion shows and gorgeous models on the FMDM runways, Montreal spectators are just as fashionably beautiful in their original and fierce getups… we seriously have some of the best looking people in the world grouped here in the 514 (makes for some noteworthy eyecandy)!

Bear with me ladies and gents, I am running on two hours of sleep (had to do makeup for a bridal party this morning suuuuuper early – especially considering I only hit the pillow around 2am… ughhh…).

While I fight off the sleep fairy, enjoy these street style fashionista’s Elle & Matthew snapped up yesterday!

Yesterday seemed like something of a marathon… although their weren’t too many shows that truly piqued my interest, there was more than enough to do between the events/displays going on within the festival and my own personal workload!

Busy, busy, coffee, busy, busy, coffee, coffee!

The rain came and went at pretty appropriate times and the shows went on as planned with slight delays… we Montrealers are HARD CORE!  We stick it out and ENDURE for the beauty of fashion (I loves).  I bet not even a snow storm could have stopped us …

So I spent most of my day uploading (drinking coffee), tweeting from what seems like every account imaginable (drinking coffee), and blogging (while drinking coffee… I think you get my point…) while hiding out in various Starbucks and Second Cups around the city (basically I was a total internet-java whore all day long).

It really is a wonder I wasn’t shaking like a leaf in the wind by the end of it all (although I will admit I was buzzed until 4am – couldn’t fall asleep)!

So yesterday was the Rallye Shopping – basically a guided time period where select retailers in the heart of downtown 514 created some pretty cool ambiances via in-store DJ sets, cocktails, discounted shopping (always a winner), nail bars, photo-ops… you name it.  Elle and I stopped by Guess and Marciano (who had some gorgeous manslaves serving up chocolate-dipped strawberries and free gift cards for everyone who walked through their door) and headed to McGill street to see what was happening…

We got there just in time to chill with the models and take in some beauty-prepping time!  The Transcanada runway show was an eclectic mix of traditional and somewhat stereotyped Kanuk fashion (all done by Canadian designers) with an underlying Native undertone.  I really liked how they mixed everything up and kept it fresh and modern (sometimes this theme can get a little stuffy).

The girls looked gorgeously natural with their Pocahontas-style braided hair, amped-up brows and flushed natural cheeks… the beauty for this show was dead on – they all looked like exotic/otherworldly beauties.

Tartan, plaid and furs were prominent in mostly every outfit…

Rocker model – haha, I love these girls!  So much fun!

These chain embellished leather booties looked awesome with the added red and black pom poms (made me think of Scottish bagpipers)…

The guys rocked the military lace up boots… in full pom pom flare of course…

Omg… *drool*… the smile that could melt a thousand hearts!

As you can see it was pretty wet and damp backstage, which proved to be an even bigger challenge for the dressers who couldn’t let anything even brush up against the floor (they totally killed it though – total dream team if I ever saw one)!

This red head was SUCH a cutie!  Making faces and playing around… A+ model behaviour.

Above the beautiful red accents and Canadian pride visible in the show, it was the ambiance that made the McGill runway so incredible.  Throat singers Le Golden (Karen Panigoniak and Maria Illungiayok) created an almost chilling effect with their sound, demanding the utmost silence from crowd spectators… everyone was transfixed!

So ladies and gents today is my big day!!!

I will be walking in front of approximately 1,200 people on the main stage runway (and look for Elle & Matthew – they will be in the crowd that will come on right after – the club kids)!  I am super nervous, trying not to go crazy from nerves (not allowing myself any coffee) and SUPER exhausted!

I gotta get ready to head out, get my nails did and find some appropriate underwear to sport down the runway (oh the dilemmas… LOL)… today is gonna be crazyyyyyy (so many good shows!!!  Looking forward to Forever 21, FINN Cultured+ Cured and Style Xchange)…
