Chapter 2 Advanced Data Selection in Oracle cs.kent.edu
A query nested within a query is known as subquery. For example, you want to see all the employees whose salary is above average salary. For this you have to first compute the average salary using AVG function and then compare employees salaries with this computed salary.... This "select a select"/"select in select" example looks very much like a correlated sub query which I tend to avoid by replacing with in-line views in the FROM clause. Are there similar correlated sub-query performance penalties of using "select a select"? Interestingly, I just learned of in-house use of "select a select" where approx. 16 of 20 columns selected in a query are sub-selects

- You next need to find the maximum of the SUM(salary) values returned by this query. One way to do that is to use the preceding query as an inline view. (Inline views are discussed in detail in Chapter 5.) The following SELECT takes the results from the earlier query, which is now a nested query, and applies the MAX function to retrieve the highest
